Apprentices fight with corrugated board dragon boats

The highlight of the second apprentice competition within the scalaria air challenge 2011 took place in gorgeous weather in St. Wolfgang on Lake Wolfgang (Upper Austria) this year. This time the young corrugated board creatives did not have to make flying objects, but dragon boats made of corrugated board. The boats were not only supposed to be fancy and inventive, but most important of all, they had to be suitable for water. The public was presented outstanding boats with a weight of up to 200 kg and a length of 9 m.

The ambitious apprentices of corrugated board industry had to master a length of approximately 80 m along the picturesque lake promenade of Lake Wolfgang in front of approximately 5000 spectators on the occasion of the “Corrugated board dragon boat race” on July 9th, 2011.

The winners were “The Young Vikings” of Mondi Grünburg and Mondi Möderbrugg. The “Mozilla Team” of Dunapack Mosburger Vienna was second and “SCAndalösen” of SCA Packaging Austria were third.

The competition in detail

Six teams with all together 53 apprentices, designed and built in teamwork their corrugated board dragon boats from March till May 2011. They were supported strongly by their corrugated board training companies and instructors according to the motto “Apprenticeship and advanced training on the job”.

The parameters were the same for all of them. The design was arbitrary, the character of a dragon boat had, however, to be guaranteed. Only corrugated board or a combination of corrugated board and paper were allowed as material, except helm and paddel.

An expert jury evaluated the corrugated board dragon boats according to different criteria: idea/lay-out, construction, workmanship/material processing, design, fun character and specialties were considered with 65% for the total assessment on the occasion of the scalaria air challenge 2011 in St. Wolfgang on Lake Wolfgang. Music and time measurement were taken into account with 35%.
